Although Pakatan Rakyat has been declared as dead, both PKR and DAP are not in favour of calling a fresh state election for Selangor.

There is no need for the Selangor menteri besar to call a state election when the coalition government led by PKR still enjoys a strong mandate, PKR secretary-general Rafizi Ramli said today.

Calling a snap election would be a waste of public funds and would violate the overwhelming mandate the three parties enjoy, Rafizi said at the Parliament lobby.

He justified this by citing the by-election for the Kajang state seat held last year, saying that people criticised it as a waste of public funds.

The same by- election, Rafizi ( photo ) said, had also proven that the existing state government still enjoys a strong mandate.

"Despite Pakatan having been dissolved at the national level, the mutual decision we take together, with DAP and PAS, is that it is best to continue political cooperation in the form of a coalition government at the state level," the Pandan MP said.

"In Selangor, nothing has changed as far as the platform of three parties in the administration of the state is concerned," rafizi added.

Asked whether the Selangor government was now worse off than the BN federal government, he said, “This is not an ‘apple to apple’ comparison.

Avoiding dissolution

"The BN only obtained 48 percent of the popular vote in last general election, while we (the then Pakatan Rakyat) won 52 percent of the votes," Rafizi said.

He also said the Selangor menteri besar would update the state palace on the change - that the three parties would continue to rule without formal pact.

"I think the menteri besar will do the necessary, as for getting the blessing of Sultan and updating the palace," he said.

Selangor DAP chief Tony Pua said dissolving the Selangor state assembly "is the last thing on the mind" of DAP.

Pua ( photo ) said the party would meet with Selangor Menteri Besar Azmin Ali "as soon as possible" to discuss options to preserve the Selangor government.

"The dissolution of the state assembly is something we will try hard to avoid. The last thing in our mind is to dissolve the assembly," he told reporters at the Parliament's lobby.

Asked what the options were for the parties in the state government, Pua said he would only reveal it after meeting and hearing solutions from Azmin and the state government.

"Right now I can't reveal what the options are. The menteri besar has his own options and we want to hear his options as well," Pua said.

Khalid: Don't betray the people

Shah Alam MP Khalid Samad hopes Selangor PAS will not support any fresh elections for the state and he also hopes the three parties will reach a conclusion on this soon.

Khalid said PAS, PKR and DAP should get their act together and continue serving the people of Selangor who have been loyal to the parties that replaced BN after 2008.

The former Selangor PAS deputy commissioner said their political responsibility is to serve the people and any disruptive decision will be akin to betrayal of the voters in Selangor who voted in the PKR-led government twice.

"The desire of the Selangor people remains the same. They want the three parties to get their act together. They have voted for this government and given it a two-thirds majority.

"Even when not under the flag of Pakatan Rakyat, it still does not absolve PKR, DAP and PAS of their responsibility of having a workable government specifically for the people of Selangor," Khalid added.
