Another PAS leader has tendered his resignation from the Penang state government.

 

Mhd Nasir Yahya ( photo ), one of the two PAS appointees in the Penang Island City Council (MBPP), has sent in his resignation effective June 15.

 

This was confirmed by state executive councillor for local government, Chow Kon Yeow.

 

The other councillor, Yacoob Omar, has yet to send in his resignation letter.

 

Chow, who is state DAP chairman, said that Nasir came to his office in Komtar to hand in his resignation.

 

“On behalf of the state government, I wish to thank Mhd Nasir for his contribution and service as MBPP councillor,” Chow said in a statement today.

 

When contacted, Mhd Nasir said he decided to resign after considering the matter for two days.

 

“This is my own decision. The party has yet to give any instructions. After much deliberation, I think I should resign, on principle,” he said.

 

Mhd Nasir expressed hope that the DAP and PAS would come to an “honourable compromise” to protect the interest of all whole Malaysians.

Muktamar fallout

 

“Otherwise Pakatan would have to break up, which we don't want to see,” he added.

 

Mhd Nasir was appointed to the financial management, infrastructure and traffic, enforcement and public education committee for the 2015 term.

 

He was appointed to the post after another PAS councillor Iszuree Ibrahim, was dropped from the list last year.

Mhd Nasir is a graduate in economics from University Malaya (1976) and was vice-president of Bumiputra Commerce Bank (now CIMB). He is currently the PAS chief for Bukit Gelugor.

Iszuree had incurred the wrath of the state government when he criticised the Pakatan government, in last year’s 60th PAS Muktamar in Johor, for over-development which led to several Malay villages being victims of eviction.

 

Mohd Nasir is the fourth from PAS to quit his post, after the party’s former deputy president Mohamed Sabu ( photo ), former state deputy commissioner (I) Mujahid Yusif Rawa and Penang PAS information chief Rosidi Hussain.

 

Mohamed quit as non-executive director from the boards of PBA Holdings Berhad and Penang Halal Hub, while Mujahid quit from the board of Yayasan Islam Pulau Pinang and Kolej Islam Teknologi Pulau Pinang.

Rosidi resigned as a director of Penang Youth Development Corporation.

 

Their action followed the decision by PAS 61st muktamar in Selangor last week to sever ties with DAP.

DAP had earlier severed ties with PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang, over his move to table a private members bill on hudud in Parliament.
