Three-cornered tussle for Lunas

It is a three-cornered fight in the Lunas by-election - S Anthonysamy from Barisan Nasional, Saifuddin Nasution Ismail from Barisan Alternatif and independent candidate N Letchumanan.
Nominations opened at 9am today and closed at 12.30pm without objections from any party, Returning Officer Othman Salleh announced in Kulim.

The candidates were accompanied to the nomination centre by their supporters - with both BN and BA having a large crowd. The independent candidate was also said to have brought a small group of loyal supporters along with him.
Anthonysamy is a lawyer and former Kedah MIC secretary while Saifuddin is Keadilan's Kedah Liaison Committee Secretary and Kulim division chief.
BN candidate Dr Joe Fernandez won the seat in 1999 with 9,760 votes, defeating BA's M Kathiravelo of DAP, who got a total of 5,060 votes.
Letchumanan, formerly from MIC, had also contested the same seat during the general election last year and collected a total of 87 votes. Ibrahim Md Rashidi, another independent, garnered 2,158 votes.
Six to one
A BA member, who attended the nomination rally this morning, said BA supporters were definitely more than the BN's.
""We outnumbered them six to one," Johnson Chong, BA Selangor Information chief informed malaysiakini. Some 400 BA Selangor supporters were said to have left for Lunas yesterday to provide moral support.
"The crowd that turned up to cheer Saifuddin was quite unexpected and there was a show of support from all parties of BA with members carrying their flags. It was quite overwhelming," said Keadilan's Kedah Liaison Committee assistant head, Johari Abdul.
Top-level leaders from all the BA component parties were present with the exception of DAP's Lim Kit Siang. Kedah DAP members, however, turned out in full force.
The crowd of supporters accompanying Anthonysamy was reported to have been carrying mostly Indian Progressive Front (IPF) flags.
"The BN and IPF flags outnumbered MIC's. I did not see any Umno flags," said one observer who was present at the nomination centre.
Umno flags mystery
"Umno flags were not seen anywhere although Umno vice-president Abdullah Ahmad Badawi was present," noted an MIC member, who declined to reveal his name.
Lunas MIC Operations Room officer S Palaniappan said both BN and BA had a large turnout of supporters today.
"All the BN parties were well represented and the supporters led by big guns from Umno including Badawi, Muhammad Taib and Selangor Menteri Besar Dr Khir Md Toyo.
"The MIC turnout was also very good. All the BN flags were there," said Palaniappan, refuting reports of BA observers who said that Umno flags were absent.
Police were on standby at the nomination centre to handle any disturbances.
