PAS has emphatically delivered Abdul Hadi Awang a solid mandate, with 80 percent of the votes cast in his favour.

As for the deputy presidency contest, challenger Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man ( photo ) defeated incumbent Mohamad Sabu with a landslide as well.

Abdul Hadi secured 928 votes while his challenger only secured 233 votes.

The results for other positions are still being tallied.

Although 1,189 delegates who were eligible to vote, only 1,162 ballot slips were issued, possibly due to absentees.

There were no spoilt votes and one ballot slip was not returned.

Abdul Hadi's victory is very meaningful to him because he has never been challenged since taking over from Fadzil Noor in 2002.

On paper, the challenger Ahmad was no pushover either. He was once the vice-president of PAS and has led the Malaysian Ulama Association for 17 years.

Abdul Hadi has also set the record as being the first PAS president to serve more than 13 years.

The deputy presidency contest saw Tuan Ibrahim securing 76 percent of the votes cast.

Tuan Ibrahim polled 881 votes against 279 votes secured by Mohamad.

Mohamad is a fiercely pro-Pakatan figure while Tuan Ibrahim, who is part of the party's ulama class, has played the middle ground thus far.
