Voting for the PAS top leadership at the party's 61st muktamar is now under way.

At stake are the posts of president, deputy president and three vice-presidencies, as well as 18 spots on the central working committee.

It is expected to be a deeply divisive contest with the ulama camp led by incumbent president Abdul Hadi Awang slated to zap challenger Ahmad Awang's pro-Pakatan Rakyat team.

The 1,189 delegates are expected to cast their ballots based on a chai (list), which details who is on which side of the fence.

Such a list is believed to have heavily influenced the party's Youth leadership elections which saw the ulama decimating the progressive faction.

PAS elections director Asmuni Awi told Malaysiakini the earliest the results could be announced would be 10pm.
