Syarikat Pengeluar Air Sungai Selangor (Splash) today strongly denied that there had been any fatalities of construction workers at the construction site of the Sungai Selangor Dam project.

Splash's CEO Azmi Mat Nor, in a statement said the company fully adhered to safety procedures and measures as stipulated in the 1994 Occupational Safety and Health Act, the1967 Factories and Machinery Act and other safety regulations.

He strongly refuted the claim made by a malaysiakini columnist, Harun Rashid, that accidents at the construction site have claimed the lives of at least 23 foreign workers, most of them Indonesians and Bangladeshis, and that the location of the accident sites and the burial sites are unknown ("[#1]Wrong Priorities[/#]", June 28).

The columnist stated that Splash has employed a large number of foreign workers and according to some people who have visited the site, accidents have claimed the lives of at least 23 foreign workers.

Azmi said that Splash not only emphasises on a safe working environment but also on occupational safety, safe working methods and also the provision of safety training and MS ISO 9002 quality management system standards.

"We have at present 532 workers, of which 441 are local and 91 are foreigners. None of the workers has been involved in any accident causing injuries," he said, adding that all foreign workers are well taken care off with boarding on site with all necessities provided.
