Malaysia's first Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) was launched today and will serve commuters in Bandar Sunway and Subang Jaya from tomorrow onwards.

Commuters will be able to try out the new system - which will run on a 5.4km elevated bus guideway - for free for the first two months.

The new system will also involve the introduction of busses that runs on electricity and feature onboard Wifi services.

This RM634 million project is a public-private partnership, which involved the collaboration between Sunway Group and Prasarana.

Although the bus fares have yet to be finalised, Prasarana said the promotional rate for the "park and ride" facilities will cost RM4 per day.

The BRT has been introduced in several countries, including Indonesia, China, Brazil, Peru and India, as a means of overcoming traffic congestion.

"It is my wish to see the percentage of people using public transport in Kuala Lumpur and Klang Valley increase," said Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak, who launched the project today.

Najib admitted that there were weaknesses in the integration of public transport systems, but the matter would be tackled by Putrajaya as public transport was part of his administration's national key result areas (NKRA).

The premier also hoped that the business community would contribute to society by emulating this public-private partnership project.
