Death sentences meted out on Muslim Brotherhood activists in Egypt is a cautionary tale of what could happen in Malaysia with the Prevention of Terrorism Bill (Pota), PAS MP Nasruddin Hassan said.

Muslim Brotherhood leader Mohamed Badie was on Saturday sentenced to death by hanging along with 13 members of the group, while 36 others were sentenced to life in prison on terrorism charges.

"This has an impact on the Pota passed by the Dewan Rakyat last week. The definition of terrorism and organisations deemed as terror groups must be further refined in the bill," the Temerloh MP said.

Opposition MPs fought tooth and nail to stop the Pota, which was passed 79 votes to 60 at 2.25am last Tuesday after the opposition bench forced nine bloc votes to amend the bill.

Nasruddin was not present for the final vote because he left to chair the Jawatankuasa Himpunan Derita Rakyat meeting.

He debated against the Pota, which allows detention without trial for up to two years, during the second reading.

The PAS central committee member also urged Wisma Putra to state its stand over the death sentences against members of the group which was ousted from government through a military coup in 2013.

"I am waiting for Wisma Putra’s response on this. Does Wisma Putra believe the Abdel Fattah As-Sisi regime’s charge that the Muslim Brotherhood leaders are terrorists?" he asked.

He added that Sisi is the "real terrorist", having toppled Egypt’s democratically-elected President Mohamed Morsi and attacked peaceful protesters.

Those sentenced to death and life in prison faced charges of funding the August 2013 protest sit in and spreading "false information" to destabilise Egypt. They are appealing the sentences.
