Zairil: Has Hadi forgotten about Memali?
PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang appear to have forgotten how Umno had betrayed PAS in the past, warned DAP assistant secretary Zairil Khir Johari.
PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang appear to have forgotten how Umno had betrayed PAS in the past, warned DAP assistant secretary Zairil Khir Johari.
Commenting on Abdul Hadi's insistence that PAS negotiates with Umno to ensure the implementation of hudud law in Kelantan, Zairil said it appeared that the former had forgotten about Umno's previous betrayals.
He said PAS had lost control of Kelantan in the 1980s because of a split in the party engineered by Umno.
"Not only did PAS lose Kelantan, the party was almost destroyed by the leadership crisis. Has this been forgotten?
"What about the Memali tragedy in 1985? If PAS wants to work with Umno, shoudn't they be held accountable for the death of Ibrahim Libya and his followers?" asked Zairil.
Zairil said that it would be a great misfortune for Malaysians seeking change should PAS leaders now depend on their rivals for their own interest.
The Memali incident revolved around police attempts to arrest Ibrahim under the Internal Security Act. He had barricaded himself among his followers in Memali, Baling.
In the siege that ensued, Ibrahim and 13 of his followers were slain. Four police personnel were killed as well.
Against Nik Aziz's wishes
Meanwhile, another Federal Territories DAP secretary Lim Lip Eng said Abdul Hadi had appeared to have forgotten former PAS spiritual leader Nik Aziz Nik Mat's repeated stance that "PAS must not be bitten by the same snake twice".
"I am shocked and puzzled at how a few PAS leaders now claims, after Nik Aziz's death, that the latter had welcomed cooperation between PAS and Umno," he said.
Lim said he has met Nik Aziz several times in the past and the latter had made it very clear Umno cannot be trusted because they will do anything to cling on to power.
"I also recall during the Pakatan Rakyat convention in 2009 when the late Nik Aziz had asked Umno, ' Nak pinang lagi ?' (are they trying to woo us again?)
"When the Tok Guru was still alive, he had never said that PAS needs to collaborate with Umno.
"However, we can find many media statements made by him on the contrary [...] So why are some PAS leaders still insistent on working with Umno?" he asked.
