Inspector-General of Police Khalid Abu Bakar said police will look through the police reports lodged against Dr Mahathir Mohamad to determine if there was any offence committed.

He added that should it be discovered that there are no grounds for an investigation, the police would close the file on the matter.

"We will go through all reports and identify if there are any offences disclosed.

"We will close the file if there are none," he told Malaysiakini .

Khalid was asked to respond to police reports being filed nationwide against Mahathir by NGO Solidariti Anak Muda Malaysia (SAMM), who want the police to probe the former premier under the Sedition Act.

SAMM Coordinator Badrul Hisham Saharin argued that since he (Badrul Hisham) was investigated under the Sedition Act for penning a book on the Altantuya Shaariibuu murder, Mahathir too should be investigated.

Previously, the IGP said Mahathir did not breach the Sedition Act with his remarks concerning the Altantuya case, where the former premier wanted an investigation to determine if the two former police commandos convicted of her murder had acted under orders.

The police chief had said then that the issue had already been widely discussed and ruled out the need for a fresh probe in the absence of new evidence.

In a blog posting last week, Mahathir had raised the Altantuya murder case in an acerbic salvo against Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak, implying that the latter had links to the case.

In a subsequent posting, the former premier said he was not accusing Najib of having committed a crime but merely sought an answer for a question which was on the people's minds.

In a pre-recorded interview aired on TV3 last night, Najib reiterated his innocence and that he did not know the Mongolian national.
