Media practitioners today wore black in solidarity with The Malaysian Insider ( TMI ) and The Edge editors and executives who were arrested.

A picture taken in front of the Parliament building today shows media personnel, from both the mainstream media and online portals, donning black outfits.

Some were also seen wearing yellow ribbons, which symbolises press freedom.

Staff of Malaysiakini, The Star, The Sun, The Rakyat Post and The Ant Daily also wore black today, expressing their solidarity.

The Sun editor R Nadeswaran had yesterday urged the move via Twitter.

"Calling all media people: wear black tomorrow to show support for our brothers. Let’s make a stand. Stand in solidarity. We will not be cowed," he said in a tweet.

This comes after about 50 media practitioners and supporters endured the drizzle in Kuala Lumpur last night to stand in solidarity with the detained editors.

They had gathered in front of the Dang Wangi police headquarters from as early as 7pm, holding candles and wearing yellow ribbons.

TMI managing editor Lionel Morais, Bahasa Malaysia news editor Amin Iskandar and features and analysis editor Zulkifli Sulong were released at 8.20pm from Dang Wangi police station.

The portal’s chief executive Jahabar Sadiq and The Edge publisher Ho Kay Tat were released on bail this morning .

They were arrested over a TMI report claiming the Conference of Rulers had rejected the hudud amendment in Kelantan. The keeper of the rulers’ seal had however denied this.

They are being investigated under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1988 and Section 4 of the Sedition Act 1948.

Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 concerns the improper use of network facilities or network service, which is punishable with a fine of up to RM50,000 or imprisonment up to a year or both.

Section 4 concerns the uttering, publication, importing of seditious material or committing acts that have seditious tendency, which is punishable with a fine of up to RM5,000 or imprisonment up to three years or both.
