Although the government was committed under the Eight Malaysia Plan to help uplift the economic status of Indians, there were obstacles in implementation because it was not being monitored, a Bernama report quoted him as saying.
There must be close monitoring to ensure the relevant officers wholeheartedly implemented these policies to benefit the Indian community," Samy Vellu told a press conference after addressing the 58th MIC General Assembly in Shah Alam today.
"If there is close monitoring then there are opportunities for Indians to progress economically," he added.
Samy said Indians were still lagging economically and the best way to help them is through education and equity participation, but this could only be achieved through government assistance.
Samy said the Indian community's equity share participation remained at 1.5 per cent because the market had not performed well in the past.
He urged government owned-companies and the private sector to allocate their shares now as the market was doing well.
The government aimed to raise the 1.6 million Indian economic pie to 3 per cent by 2010, he said
Tribute to Pak Lah
Meanwhile, Bernama also reported that Samy Vellu paid tribute to Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi for winning the "hearts and minds" of Malaysians in such a short span of time since taking office in October last year.
He called on MIC leaders and delegates at the assembly to reflect on the noble principles of good governance instituted by the prime minister.
He said Abdullah had challenged all politicians to uphold noble principles such as personal ethics, integrity, transparency and accountability in public office and institutions, with elected representatives asked to exhibit a higher degree of responsibility by adhering to a code of ethics and meet the performance measurement index, initiated by Abdullah.
Samy Vellu said the party also appreciated Abdullah's gesture in providing an additional deputy minister and parliamentary secretary positions to the MIC which would further strengthen the cause of the party to serve the Malaysian Indian community.
