Two Perak Pakatan Rakyat assemblypersons and four others have been charged at the Kuala Lumpur magistrates’ court today with obstructing a public officer in the performance of his duty.

Teja assemblyperson ‎Chang Lih Kang and Simpang Pulai assemblyperson Tan Kar Hing claimed trial, as did the others. Bail has been set at RM2000 each.

The incident took place at Jalan Tun Perak near the Dataran Merdeka water fountain at 12.35am on March 27 in relation to the Kita Lawan sit-in, where they allegedly tried to obstruct a Kuala Lumpur City Hall officer.

They are charged under Section 186 of the Penal Code and face the maximum of a three month jail term or a maximum fine of RM1,000, or both.

Another person, Chee Chu Sang, also faces another charge under Section 353 of the same code for using criminal force for which he also claimed trial. He has been set another RM2,000 as bail, and faces a maximum of two years jail or a fine or both.

 

The remaining three charged were former Subang Jaya council member N Tamilarason, along with PKR members Yong Ming Chong and Gan Zhi Mou. The six are between 24 and 53 years old.

Lawyer Melissa Sasidaran ( right ) appeared for all six. The prosecution was led by DPP Mohd Nordin Ismail while Lee Keng Fatt prosecuted.

 

Earlier Melissa objected that the six were charged at 4:20pm, She noted banks close at 4pm, thus making it difficult to come up with bail money.

She also pointed out that two of the accused were assemblypersons, thus were of people of repute.

“If they can’t post bail today, the court should allow bail be posted tomorrow,” said the lawyer. This was allowed by the magistrate.
