G Palanivel has expressed confidence in retaining the post of MIC president in the party elections, most probably to be held in May.
He said he had the strong support of the party branches, including 300 in Johor.
“I’ve met with over 4,000 MIC branch chairpersons, and I expect to gain the support of 2,500 branches across the country,” he said at a meeting with MIC members in Kampung Abdullah in Muar last night.
Palanivel said his focus now was to empower MIC for the benefit of the members.
“It is important to strengthen the party, especially at the leadership level, so I’m confident that I will be able to improve the party,” he said.
The Registrar of Societies (ROS) has ordered MIC to hold fresh elections after it found irregularities in the party elections of 2013 following complaints.
Palanivel, vice-presidents S Sothinathan (left) and S Balakrishnan as well as MIC strategic director AK Ramalingam have filed for a judicial review of the ROS decision
The High Court in Kuala Lumpur is set to hear submissions pertaining to the judicial review today.
