DAP's Rasah MP Teo Kok Seong is set to be released later today while activists Adam Adli and Mandeep Singh will only to be freed on Tuesday after they were arrested for participating in pro-Anwar Ibrahim rallies in Kuala Lumpur.
 
Magistrate Erry Shahriman Nor Aripin decided on a single day remand for Teo as he has to attend Parliament tomorrow.
 
However Adam and Mandeep were deemed as ‘flight risks’ and were remanded for three days which their lawyer Eric Paulsen said was shocking.
 
According to Paulsen, the police never brought this issue up. “They do not have any evidence to support this claim.”
 
He added it was a decision made by the magistrate himself.
 
“This is absurd, they are known activists who have cooperated with the police in investigations before this,” Paulsen (left) further asserted.
 
Adam and Mandeep were represented by lawyers Paulsen and Melissa Sasidaran during the hearing earlier this morning while Teo was represented by Gobind Singh Deo and Ramkarpal Singh.
 
Adam and Mandeep were nabbed during a small rally today in front of the Sogo shopping mall yesterday and were sent to the Jinjang police station in relation to their participation in the Kita Lawan rallies held on Saturdays.  

According to Bernama, Kuala Lumpur police chief Tajuddin Md Isa confirmed the duo was detained under Section 9(5) of the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012 and under Section 143 of the Penal Code at about 6pm.
 
Teo was hauled in when he went to the Dang Wangi district police headquarters to have his statement recorded over his involvement in the March 7 Kita Lawan rally.

Teo, Mandeep and Adam join five other opposition leaders who have become victims of police crackdown since the massive rally last Saturday which called for Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak to step down and Opposition Anwar Ibrahim to be freed.

CM: Police incompetent?

Meanwhile Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng condemned the police for detaining the individuals longer than necessary, and delaying their release and seeking unnecessary and excessive remand periods.

He said this was totally unnecessary for peaceful assemblies, unless the police is "incompetent".

Lim reminded the authorities that remand periods were limited by the seriousness of the offence, and offences punishable for less than 14 years is allowed remand of not more than four days on the first application.

"Does the police need to have a four-day remand order to complete investigations on a peaceful assembly, which is considered by the United Nations as a fundamental human right of freedom and not a criminal act?

"There is no need for detention, the entire process can be completed in less than 24 hours.

"If a four-day remand order is needed for such a simple matter, then the police are just incompetent in conducting investigations.

"No wonder Malaysia continues to be threatened by rising street crime and unchecked violence," said the chief minister in a statement today.

"If the police investigating their cases need a four-day remand order, then they should be retrained to speed up work and be more productive," he said.

"Or is this malicious act done deliberately to punish Teo and others by slowing down the investigation process so that he can be detained longer?" asked Lim.
