‘Psy-war best approach to tackle secession threat’

Psychological warfare is felt to be the best approach for the government to tackle the threat of the secession of Sabah and Sarawak from Malaysia (SSKM) movement.
Psychological warfare is felt to be the best approach for the government to tackle the threat of the secession of Sabah and Sarawak from Malaysia (SSKM) movement.
Asri Salleh (right), senior lecturer at the Faculty of Administrative Science and Policy Studies, Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM), Dungun campus, said this was necessary to effectively deal with the threat.
“The ‘war’ to win the hearts and minds of the people should be given priority as it could be a proactive counter-strategy to erase the secession sentiments being sowed by the group in the younger generation.
“At the same time, it could appeal to the masses not to be easily influenced by negative propaganda spread by the group via leaflets or the social websites.”
Asri said this in his talk titled ‘The SSKM Movement Threat: Psychological Strategy and Appraoch in Tackling the Separatist Movement’, organised by the Sabah Special Affairs Department in Kota Kinablu yesterday.
Asri said the federal and state governments should view the SSKM movement as a serious threat, which if not tackled inclusively and continuously, could be like a thorn in the flesh.
Regarding the SSKM movement as dangerous, he said their propaganda was like that of separatist groups in some countries to sow hatred against the ruling government.
He said their concept of struggle was based on self-determination to rule the respective countries themselves.
Asri said the SSKM movement might also have a direction for the future involving the big foreign powers and cooperation with separatist or subversive groups.
He said it was not impossible for the SSKM movement to be a Trojan horse for certain quarters, including political parties and non-governmental organisations, to serve their own interests.
