Penang PAS deputy commissioner Dr Mujahid Yusof Rawa said there was a possibility that a contest would take place despite calls that the post being held by Abdul Hadi Awang needed not be challenged.
'I do not agree that the party will split up after the election.'
Penang PAS deputy commissioner Dr Mujahid Yusof Rawa said there was a possibility that a contest would take place despite calls that the post being held by Abdul Hadi Awang (below) needed not be challenged.
However he does not think the party would split if there is a challenge to the post of president at the 61st PAS central election committee to be held in June.
Mujahid said traditionally the PAS president's post had never been challenged since the era of the Islamic party's former president Asri Muda in 1976.
"But as time goes by, PAS members became more mature. When there is a candidacy for the post of president, it is not wrong according to the party constitution, as PAS practised democracy although it (challenge) never occur previously," he told reporters in George Town today.
He said the challenge for the president's post might take place as PAS members were more matured and hoped for a leadership that could meet the party's aspiration in the present times.
"I do not agree that the party will split up after the election and I also do not agree that based on that reason we should not contest. We have to revert back to a spirit of competitiveness," said Mujahid, who is also Parit Buntar member of parliament.
