Political science lecturer Prof Mohammad Agus Yusof has described last weekend’s Malay unity rally as nothing more than Umno’s rhetoric.
"Umno continues to be excited over the Malay agenda. The leaders repeated the vow to make the Malays great.
"However, it is mere rhetoric because I did not see any new product being offered to make the Malays great,” he said in a recent Facebook posting.
The Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia lecturer’s comments were also picked up by Ismaweb, the online mouthpiece of Ikatan Muslimin Malaysia (Isma).
According to Mohammad Agus (below), the nation’s politics is still tied to three main issues, Anwar Ibrahim, religion and the Malays.
In an obvious reference to Sodomy II prosecutor Muhammad Shafee Abdullah, he said even though the Opposition Leader has been imprisoned, there are those going on a roadshow to embarrass Anwar further.
"On the other hand, there are still demonstrations and candlelight vigils held to seek justice for him (Anwar)," he added.
Meanwhile, Mohamad Agus said PAS continues to portray itself as the only party which champions Islam.
"Supporting other parties apart from PAS is considered a rejection of Islam as if PAS is the only one concerned about Islam," he added.
In view of this, he said the people must rise to determine the political direction of this nation, which is now haywire.
During the Malay unity rally, Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak had outlined seven decrees that would make the Malays knowledgeable, empower their economy in the 21st century, and to make them strong, powerful and dignified.
The other decrees are to champion the interests of Islam, defend Malay rulers and Malay privileges, uphold maqasid syaria (Islamic law) by being moderate, retain pure values and take care of the family institution.
Najib, who is also Umno president, said if the Malays hold on to these decrees, they would emerge as a race respected by others around the world and become self-reliant.
