The Selangor executive council today rejected a proposal by the Petaling Jaya City Council to award a three month bonus to councillors and staff for 2014.

The proposal was made following an increase in MBPJ’s revenue.

However, Menteri Besar Azmin Ali said that the exco approved a one month performance-based bonus for MBPJ councillors and staff.

"A rise in revenue through collection from the people should be used to improve services, and not be viewed as profits," he said in a statement.

The exco also urge all local councils to "understand that their purpose to serve the people".

All collections must be channelled into better roads, waste management and  environment for residents, he said.

"Local councils must explore and invest in new services to raise quality of living," he said.

The exco will also prepare a strict guildeline to ensure local councils responsibly and transparently manage their funds, he said.

Last Friday, MBPJ voted to award the three months’ bonus to its employees during a full board meeting.

Eleven councillors voted for the bonus while eight votes against it.

MBPJ has been under fire for poor road maintenance, with locals forced to take to posting geo tagged pictures online to pressure the council to fix the numerous pot holes.
