Accident at MRT works in Semantan kills one

One Bangladeshi worker died as a result of an accident at an MRT worksite at the V4 Semantan portal today.
A statement by the Mass Rapid Transit Corporation Sdn Bhd (MRT Corp) confirmed that three workers, all Bangladeshis, were involved in the incident.

One Bangladeshi worker died as a result of an accident at an MRT worksite at the V4 Semantan portal today.
A statement by the Mass Rapid Transit Corporation Sdn Bhd (MRT Corp) confirmed that three workers, all Bangladeshis, were involved in the incident.
Rijaul Abdul Goni, 40, died on the spot. Another, identified as Shanaullah, 37, was injured and sent to Kuala Lumpur Hospital.
The third person identified as Rozlu Karim escaped injury.
The workers were assembling a rebar cage when the ties that held the rebars gave way and fell on the workers, said MRT Corp.
A rebar is a steel bar or mesh of steel wires used as a tension device in reinforced concrete to strengthen and hold the concrete in tension.
MRT Corp said the police and forensics team arrived at the MRT worksite at 3pm.
“Investigations have commenced to determine the cause of incident,” read the statement.
MRT Corp’s strategic communications and public relations director Amir Mahmood Razak said an update will be issued with more details later today.
“Allahyarham Rijaul’s body has been sent to the hospital for a post-mortem. This will reveal the cause of death, and we will share this information once it is available,” he said.
Work has been suspended at the V4 Semantan portal interface site until further notice.
This is not the first time that an accident had occurred at an MRT worksite.
An accident in August claimed the lives of three Bangladeshi workers who were working at a construction site in Kota Damansara.
A 650-tonne span on the MRT guideway dislodged from its piers and fell to the ground. The three who were working on the span were thus trapped under the concrete blocks.
Former MRT Corp chief executive officer Azhar Abdul Hamid tendered his resignation over the incident.
