Penang exco man latest to fall into Sedition dragnet

Penang state exco member Afif Bahardin is the latest in a piling list to be investigated under the Sedition Act over his statement on the Federal Court's verdict with regard to PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim.

Penang state exco member Afif Bahardin is the latest in a piling list to be investigated under the Sedition Act over his statement on the Federal Court's verdict with regard to PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim.
The PKR Youth deputy chief was called up to have his statement recorded at the Bukit Aman police headquarters today.
Afif (left) told reporters that the investigation was based on an article in a news website that published his speech on Feb 10, the day Anwar was convicted.
"This is about the speech I made outside the courthouse after the announcement of the decision on Sodomy II.
"However, I am not at liberty to mention which news site it is, as it is still under investigation," he said.
Similarly, on Feb 10 police arrested cartoonist Zunar for sedition over a tweet regarding the judiciary that read, "The lackeys in black robes are proud of their sentence. The reward from political masters must be plenty."
Inspector-general of police (IGP) Khalid Abu Bakar in response tweeted an order to "trace and investigate" Zunar over his remark.
Dragnet sees no end
Last week, yet another cartoonist Lawrence Jeyaraj under the Independent Cartoonist Group (KKI) was detained for sedition.
Also caught in the sedition dragnet, Parti Sosialis Malaysia secretary general S Arutcelvan was arrested in relation to a statement he released regarding Anwar's conviction. He was arrested on the first day of Chinese New Year.
Recently, during a Feb 14 Kita Lawan rally organised in solidarity with Anwar by PKR youth chief Nik Nazmi Nik Ahamd, police arrested activist Adam Adli and PKR supreme council member Fariz Musa.
Nik Nazmi, however, was arrested a day later at his home and was hauled to Jinjang police station under Section 143 of the Penal Code which deals with illegal assembly.
The IGP has come under heavy criticism for the police's relentless investigations and arrest of dissenting voices.
Khalid, dubbed 'Ketua Police Twitter' (Twitter police chief) was also mocked by numerous people for his active usage of Twitter to the extent of giving out orders via the social media platform.
