The current dry spell and drop in water level at the Teluk Bahang and Mengkuang Dams in George Town will not affect the overall water supply in the state said Penang chief minister Lim Guan Eng.

Lim said the water level at the Teluk Bahang Dam was 72.6 percent while the Mengkuang Dam registered a 31 percent reading, today compared with the same day last year when the Teluk Bahang Dam was at 90 percent and Mengkuang Dam at 48.54 percent.

“Though the water level has dropped due to the current dry spell, we believe the supply can last for two months... maybe can exceed two months because last year it was enough to cater for the people despite a similar dry spell,” he told reporters in George Town today.

Lim said the Air Itam Dam however, had registered an increase in the water level compared with the same period last because today's reading was 85 percent compared with 69 percent on the same day, last year.

The chief minister, who is also the Penang Water Supply Corporation (PBAPP) chief, assured residents that the water at the dam was enough to last 83 days.

He said the critical level for the Air Itam Dam was 27.6 percent, Teluk Bahang Dam (36.7 percent), Mengkuang Dam (37 percent).
