Chempaka by-election set for March 22

By-election for the Chempaka state seatin Kelantan has been fixed for March 22, with nomination date falling on March 10. Election Commission (EC) chairperson Abdul Aziz Mohd Yusof announced this today.
With a total 12 days for the campaign, the estimated expenses of the EC for the by-election will be RM810,000, he said.

The eighth by-election takes place following the death of PAS spiritual leader Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat, who succumbed to prostate cancer on Feb 12, at the age of 84.
A total of 21,890 voters will be eligible for vote, Aziz told a press conference after an EC meeting earlier today.
Advanced voting by the 1,497 early voters will be on March 18, he said, adding that there are only three absentee voters in the constituency.
Pejabat Tanah dan Jajahan Kota Baru deputy chief Ibrahim Bakri Mat Deris has been appointed as returning officer, he announced.
Kelantan Umno chairperson Mustapa Mohamed said recently that in his personal opinion, the BN need not contest the Chempaka seat, so that it could focus on grabbing the Permatang Pauh parliamentary seat, following the five-year jail term imposed on PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim on his Sodomy II conviction.
The EC has yet to discuss the by-election date for Permatang Pauh.
"For Permatang Pauh, we have to wait 14 days. Under the law, Anwar can appeal to the King and can seek to review (the Feb 10 Sodomy II judgment of Federal Court)," Aziz said.
"Only after Feb 24, we will conduct a special meeting, if no appeal is made by him," he said, adding the EC will decide on the date for the by-election after this.
Anwar won the May 13 general election for the seat in a three-cornered fight against BN's Mazlan Ismail and independent Abdullah Zawawi Samsudin, securing it with a 11,721-vote majority.
