Sodomy II prosecutor Muhmmad Shafee Abdullah's willingness to take an oath in Mecca over the case only smears the religion, the Muslim Youth Movement of Malaysia (Abim) said.
Sodomy II prosecutor Muhmmad Shafee Abdullah's willingness to take an oath in Mecca over the case only smears the religion, the Muslim Youth Movement of Malaysia (Abim) said.
Shafee had in an interview with Mingguan Malaysia said he is willing to take an oath in a mosque or in Mecca that he had taken the case believing Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim is guilty of sodomy.
"Roping in the institution of mosques and Mecca, most likely our foremost mosque the Masjidil Haram in Mecca, is unacceptable for Muslims.
"Mecca is a holy land in Islam and Shafee has revealed his religious ignorance," Abim president Amidi Mohd Manan said.
Amidi (below) said even the Prophet Muhammad never chose that path when his wife Aisyah was slandered.
"Clearly taking oaths in matters like this is not part of Islamic teachings.
"Shafee needs to understand the concept, methods and roles of oaths in Islam.
"Aisyah was directly slandered and she did not resort to oaths so what more a third party who only hears or reads reports from testimonies," he said.
Shafee in the interview published last Sunday said he was willing to take a religious oath to prove Anwar was not maligned.
"If Anwar was maligned, you don't need to wait for me to die for me to go to hell. I will go to hell here on earth.
"If nothing happened to me, maybe something would happen to my children or my family.
"I am prepared to take a oath in a mosque or in Mecca that when I took up this case, I did so with the sincere belief that he is guilty," he told the Umno-owned newspaper.
Shafee also said Anwar, a former Abim president, would have been savaged if he testified from the witness stand and not made a statement from the dock.
Will Najib speak up?
This has prompted law professor Gurdial Singh Nijar to question if he had breached legal ethics.
In a related matter, DAP urged Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak must speak up to defend administration of justice in Malaysia.
Its Gelang Patah MP Lim Kit Siang (right) says this is impertative after revelations that the Attorney-General Abdul Gani Patail for appointing Shafee as Sodomy II prosecutor despite a police probe against Shafee.
Former Kuala Lumpur Criminal Investigation Department chief Mat Zain Ibrahim told Malaysiakini in an exclusive interview that Shafee is being investigated for lying in affidavits.
Mat Zain said he found out about this when he was called to give a statement for the investigation on May 19, 2014 in relation to three reports he made on the matter in Dec 2013.
This is a severe blow after Malaysia's judiciary was condemned by global powers after the Federal Court sentenced Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim to five years jail for sodomy last week, he said.
“Mat Zain's allegations are serious and cannot be ignore by the prime minister...
“Will there continue to be inelegant silence from the Prime Minister on the national and international crisis of confidence of the Malaysian judiciary and rule of law?” Lim asked.
