Newly-incarcerated opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim will remain as Selangor's state economic adviser, confirms Selangor Menteri Besar Azmin Ali.

"Anwar will remain (as state economic adviser)," Azmin told reporters at a hotel in Subang Jaya today.

Asked how Anwar would give advice while behind bars, Azmin said there was nothing wrong with that.

"Why not? He can convey his messages through his lawyers and family members.

"We certainly need his advice," he said.

Anwar had, in December last year, said he would remain as the Selangor state economic adviser despite having his Datuk Seri title revoked by the Sultan of Selangor.

“I will continue to serve as the Selangor economic adviser to look after the welfare of Selangor and its people,” the Permatang Pau MP had said.

Chief Justice Arifin Zakaria, in declaring Anwar as guilty in the Sodomy II appeal judgment yesterday, said there was “overwhelming evidence” that the accuser, Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan, was sodomised by Anwar, with there being “substantial scientific and corroborative evidence”.

However, Justice Arifin said, the five-year jail sentence imposed by the Court of Appeal would not be enhanced.

Anwar was sent to the Sungai Buloh Prison yesterday to begin his sentence.
