The absence of PAS members at the Palace of Justice and party president Abdul Hadi Awang exploiting the verdict on Anwar Ibrahim to push for hudud spells peril for Pakatan Rakyat, said MCA.

"Is this the way for allies to behave?" asked central committee member Ng Chok Sin.

As partners, he said, PAS would have been expected to show a united front with PKR as the Federal Court decided on the opposition leader’s fate yesterday.

"On such an occasion when partners are expected to throw support for each other after the verdict was delivered, shouldn't concern be for your loosely meshed triumvirate's chief and his family as well as your ailing partnership's future direction?

"Obviously not to Hadi who has a track record of skipping Pakatan presidential council meetings," he added in a statement.        

Chong also pointed out that Hadi's statement that only Syariah law could have accorded Anwar justice indicated how PAS would “ditch its voters” to ensure that the party’s theocratic ambition is realised.

He also questioned what the PAS president had implied with his statement that only Syariah law could provide justice.

Anwar's conviction and imprisonment have fueled concerns about the opposition bloc’s future, especially with the wide fissures between PAS and DAP.

In his final message after the verdict, the opposition leader had called on Pakatan to remain strong.
