Exco to 'work with cops' over Friday sermon view

Penang state executive member Chong Eng said that she is willing to cooperate with the police over her criticism on Selangor Islamic Affairs Department (Jais) for its views on rape.

"I have seen the IGP's tweet and I will give my full cooperation to the police. I maintain that I am just giving an alternative view about rape in my statement," said Chong Eng.
Chong Eng encountered trouble yesterday with the police over her statement criticising the Selangor Islamic Religious Department (Jais) for its views on rape.
The state exco, who is in charge of women's affairs in Penang, had said that Jais issued misleading information regarding rape in its sermon last Friday.
She said Jais' statement was "disrespectful and smacked of male bias".
Chong Eng was referring to the sermon which claimed that covering of the "aurat" can prevent women from physical and mental harassment, and can reduce incidents of rape, illicit sex and incest.
Late last night, inspector-general of police Khalid Abu Bakar (right) tweeted that a Penang executive councillor will be hauled up by the police for criticising the sermon.
"The police has repeatedly (issued) reminders to be careful when (making) sensitive comments which touch on religion, but it has not been heeded," he tweeted last night.
Khalid also tweeted that the Penang DAP lawmaker will be probed under Section 298 of the Penal Code.
Section 298 states that, "Whoever, with deliberate intention of wounding the religious feelings of any person, utters any word or makes any sound in the hearing of that person, or makes any gesture in the sight of that person, or places any object in the sight of that person, shall be punished with imprisonment for a term which may extend to one year, or with fine, or with both".
Chong - who is also the DAP Wanita chief - is the second person to be hauled up by the police for allegedly criticising Friday sermons.
Last week, human rights lawyer Eric Paulsen was charged under the 1948 Sedition Act for tweeting that the Malaysian Islamic Religious Department (Jakim) promotes extremism in its texts for the Friday sermons.
