PAS' Parit Buntar MP Mujahid Yusof Rawa has expressed reservation about his party's push for hudud in Kelantan and its plans to table the theocratic law in Parliament next month.

Instead, Mujahid said the priority should be reconstruction efforts in the state, which was devastated by the country's worst floods in decades.

"I would agree very much that the issue in Kelantan is not about mooting the hudud law.

"It is about rebuilding Kelantan from the floods - that is more of a priority," he told journalists after a forum in Kuala Lumpur this afternoon.

However, Mujahid (left) admitted that he doesn't know whether his own party will share the same view.

"I don't know if that represents my party's stance or not, but we will discuss (the matter) at the PAS central committee meeting tomorrow," he added.

Mujahid made the comments after being asked if he was facing a dilemma over PAS' plans to introduce the hudud bill in Parliament next month.

Earlier, Mujahid was speaking at a forum organised by RoketKini to commemorate first prime minister Tunku Abdul Rahman, and also to celebrate national laureate A Samad Said.

Both Tunku Abdul Rahman and A Samad Said share the same birthday.

Dilemma of party politics

He had lamented about the difficulties of being a politician due to the country's political system that requires politicians to toe the party line.

"For example, as MP... when I need to vote, in my heart I do not agree to support it, but my party said I must support.

"Can you imagine the state of dilemma at that time, when my heart and instincts say 'no', but the party wants us to support?"

He pointed out that those who have refused to tow the party line in the House have been sacked before.

"Maybe I will try it (going against party lines)? I don't know," he added, but did not mention what he was referring to specifically.

Mujahid also emphasised the need of politicians to first learn to become statesmen before becoming politicians, taking Tunku Abdul Rahman (right) as an example.

He stressed that those who fought for democracy must be genuine democrats, instead of mere politicians talking about democracy.
