PAS adamant in opposing Penang local polls

PAS remains adamant not to agree with DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng that local council elections be held in Penang.
Sinar Harian reported PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang saying that local council elections only involved the city folk and that the implementation is related to the federal government.

PAS remains adamant not to agree with DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng that local council elections be held in Penang.
Sinar Harian reported PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang saying that local council elections only involved the city folk and that the implementation is related to the federal government.
“When there are polemics over a debate between PAS secretary-general Mustafa Ali and Lim (left), PAS has its own stand.
“To manage cities, it should not only involve the city folk. The local elections will see only the city folk voting when in fact those who make the city ‘alive’ are not only the city folk but the fishermen and the farmers as well,” he said.
Abdul Hadi had previously warned that having local council elections could lead to racial riots, like the May 13 1969 riots.
PAS and DAP have continued with their spats, with leaders from both parties continuing to criticise the other over the matter.
Meanwhile, Abdul Hadi again pointed out that the local elections are related to the federal government in that it has its own ministry.
“We cannot simply go against it, especially since we are not the federal government. We have to realise that our society is arranged as such by the British.
He said the British had placed the Chinese in towns, the Malays in rural areas and the Indians in plantations.
“The colonisers purposely did that so that there is racial tension and we, on our part, must eliminate such tension,” he said.
Mat Sabu: Local gov't polls issue will be discussed
The issue of local government elections championed by DAP will be discussed at PAS' upcoming meetings, said PAS deputy president Mohamad Sabu, reports Bernama today.
He said after that, it will be discussed by the Pakatan.
"Parties having their own views is something normal in politics," he told reporters after attending a donation drive to collect funds for flood victims in Kota Baharu, Kelantan, last night.
Asked about the tiff between PAS secretary-general Datuk Mustafa Ali and Penang Chief Minister and DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng on the matter, Mohamad better known as Mat Sabu (left) tried to avoid the question and was only willing to say:"I don't want to make any comment."
Mustafa has been reported as asking Lim to a debate for allegedly saying that he (Mustafa) had been untruthful that the Pakatan made up of PAS, DAP and PKR, had discussed the matter of local government elections.
