Electoral watchdog Bersih 2.0 today sounded the alarm that there is only a week left for Sarawak voters to submit objections to the Election Commission’s (EC) new redelineation process for the state and parliamentary seats in Sarawak.

“Bersih thus urges registered voters in the following state and parliamentary constituencies that are unconstitutionally malapportioned to submit a formal objection to the EC before the objection period ends,” the Bersih 2.0 steering committee said in a statement today.

The NGO listed down 15 state and eight parliament constituencies are being “grossly deviated” from the state average population size for a constituency.

It pointed out that the state seat of Pelawan, which has 31,338 voters, is 132 percent the size of the state average of 13,526 voters for every state constituency.

Meanwhile, the Bandar Kuching parliament seat has 78,394 voters, 119 percent bigger than the state parliamentary average of 35,779 voters per constituency.

“The power to stop unabated malapportionment in Sarawak by the EC is in the hands of voters in the state,” it said, adding that Bersih has no locus standi to submit any objections to the EC.

“What Bersih can do is to point voters to the serious flaws in the EC’s proposed redelineation, and urge Sarawak voters in the constituencies mentioned to take action as per their constitutional right,” it added.

Voters can download the objection form from the Bersih’s Dart website, and have 100 registered voters in their constituency sign the objection and submit the objections by Feb 4.

“This is our urging to Sarawakians - what you do this week may decide our future for the next 10 years,” it said.
