State-owned investment company 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) plans to seek another one-month extension on a RM2 billion loan, reported Star Biz.

Quoting sources, the business paper said that 1MDB needed more time to sell a stake in its energy unit before repaying its debt, noting that the company was also currently in discussions with tycoon T Ananda Krishnan.

Ananda reportedly has the option to exercise an option to buy part of Edra Global Energy Bhd, which he sold to 1MDB in 2012.

1MDB, chaired by Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak, has been under intense scrutiny of late after it was revealed that the company has RM41.9 billion in debt as of March 2014.

It is understood that lending institutions have granted several extensions to 1MDB to service the loan.

Yesterday, Bank Negara governor Zeti Akhtar Aziz refused comment on the situation, stressing that the central bank will never comment on individual entities.

However, she revealed that any extensions given to 1MDB is not done by Bank Negara but by commercial lenders.
