Langkawi Fire Dept chief charged with corruption

Langkawi Fire and Rescue Station chief Yaakob Hassan pleaded not guilty in the Alor Setar Sessions Court today to two charges of soliciting for, and accepting, bribes in October 2012.

On the first charge, Yaakob, 47, was alleged to have made a telephone call at 7.46am on Oct 13, 2012, seeking a RM10,000 bribe from one Jamat Harun as an inducement to call off a police investigation against one Mohd Sharif Affandi Jamat.
On the second, he was alleged to received RM2,000 from one Ahmad Ridzwan Jamat at 3pm on Oct 14, 2012, at the office of the station chief at the Langkawi Fire and Rescue Station in Jalan Kisap, as an inducement to call off a police investigation against the same individual.
Yaakob also faced an alternative charge of having cheated Ahmad Ridzwan into believing that the police investigation on Mohd Shafiq had been called off, and coaxing him to hand over RM2,000 to him.
Judge Azhar Mokhtar allowed Yaakob bail of RM5,000 in one surety, and set Feb 26 for mention of the case.
The prosecution was represented by deputy public prosecutor A Hafiizh Abu Bakar of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), while Parmjit Singh appeared as the counsel for Yaakob.
