It has been more than two months since Syed Azlan Syed Mohamad Nur died in police custody, but his family continues to be in the dark on the circumstances surrounding his death. 
 
On Wednesday, the Enforcement Agency Integrity Commission (EAIC) called the father, Syed Mohamad Nur Ali, to furnish a statement on the matter.
 
“I am dissatisfied that there has been no action by the police, even to explain what happened to my son when he was in custody,” the 68-year-old farmer told Malaysiakini.
 
Syed Mohamad (right) added that a proper “investigation process should be conducted” by the police and the case be brought to the court.
 
Previously, family members wrote a letter to the police seeking an explanation but they have yet to receive a response.
 
Meanwhile, their lawyer Gobind Singh Deo stated that they would be pursuing the matter until a satisfactory clarification is obtained.
 
The DAP MP said the fact that the police’s failure to reply to Syed Mohamad’s letter revealed their “lackadaisical attitude”.
 
Foul play suspected
 
Gobind urged inspector-general of police Khalid Abu Bakar to pursue the issue promptly.
 
“The IGP should take matters like this more seriously and respond to this immediately,” he told Malaysiakini.
 
Syed Azlan, 25, died on Nov 4 while being transferred from the Sungai Rengit police station to the Kota Tinggi district police headquarters in Johor.
 
The family claimed that his body was covered in bruises and "hole-shaped puncture marks" which made them suspect foul play.
 
However, Johor CID chief Hasnan Hassan claimed that the deceased was a drug addict and had sustained the injuries while resisting arrest.
 
The post-mortem report stated that Syed Azlan died from being hit on the chest with a blunt object.
