Lawyer Eric Paulsen tweeted trouble when he claimed that the Department of Islamic Development of Malaysia (Jakim) has been promoting extremism through Friday sermons at mosques.

Paulsen (left) was arrested Monday night and is being investigated under the Sedition Act.

Some have defended him while others have condemned him. Anti-Sedition Act proponents also  have criticised the arrest.

Malaysiakini has compiled a list of articles, both from the English and BM sections, regarding previous Friday sermons prepared by Jakim for mosques in the Federal Territories and in states without rulers.

Even though some of the topics can be considered sensitive and inflammatory, the sermons also advised Muslims on proper conduct and the importance of interfaith and interracial ties.

As for last Friday’s sermon, when Paulsen posted his tweet, it touched on the slander and lies spread during the recent floods in several states, warning that such conduct is against Islam.

Quoting an Islamic scholar, it also called on Muslims not to compromise to the point where their rights are lost.

The same sermon text also urged Muslims to donate cash and kind for the flood victims.

In the past, critics have accused Jakim of churning out sermons that appear to defend government policies, such as the implementation of the Goods and Services Tax.
