Terengganu PAS has asked where did the RM800 million spent on aid for flood victims go to when many are still without basic supplies and shelter.

Its director of flood operations, Dr Azman Ibrahim, said he had met victims in Hulu Dungun who had been out of basic supplies for a week, and said he knew that the victims still had to seek shelter at relief centres.

“So the question is, with the RM800 million spent, why did all these things still happen? And this is only in Terengganu, I know the situation is even worse in Kelantan,” he said in a statement today.

Azman said the PAS flood operations team was instead helped with funds from NGOs such as Yayasan Amal Malaysia.

“We did not get one sen from the government,” he said, further questioning whether the flood, although a calamity for the rakyat, was a blessing (rahmat) for Umno.

“A blessing for them to snatch money allocated for flood victims!” he said.

Deputy Finance Minister Ahmad Maslan on Monday had confirmed that RM800 million had been spent on aid for flood victims thus far.

Meanwhile, Kuala Terengganu MP Raja Kamarul Bahrin Shah Raja Ahmad said there was no need for a unity government for flood relief.

“To those who are fascinated with the idea of a unity government, it is better that we take into account the bitter reality we have faced, being manipulated by Umno,” he said.

Raja Kamarul said this was the time that Umno would want to make use of the people’s weak physical and mental position, having faced the floods.

“We should not make a decision in a position of weakness, we should instead do it in a position of strength,” he said.

Malay daily Sinar Harian owner Hussamuddin Yaakob had suggested that PAS form a unity government with Umno in order to rebuild the flood-ravaged state (Kelantan).
