The parliamentary Privileges Committee has been given an extension to present its findings into an inquiry against senior opposition leader Karpal Singh (DAP-Bukit Gelugor) over 'misleading information' linked to the oath-taking ceremony for members.

The committee was initially tasked to submit the finding to the House during the current meeting but a motion was presented in the House today, seeking deferment of submission of the findings.

The Prime Minister's Department submitted the motion which read: "Due to insufficient time, the committee is not able to complete the statement (of findings) and therefore this House should allow the statement to be presented in the next meeting."

The committee will now submit its findings and recommendations at the next meeting in September. The Dewan Rakyat adjourned sine die today.

Malaysiakini understands that the committee was initially scheduled to meet yesterday to finalise its recommendations, but that the meeting was called off at the last minute without a clear reason.

Met at his office later, committee chairperson and Deputy Speaker Dr Yusof Yacob said the reason for cancelling the meeting and postponing the findings was because the matter "does not have urgency".

He declined to elaborate on the discussions to date, but said the bipartisan committee would meet again although it would not call Karpal for the inquiry.

The motion to refer Karpal to the Privileges Committee was tabled on behalf of Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi on June 14 during the last sitting.

In his motion, he said Karpal had cited the wrong legislation when protesting that certain parliamentarians had not raised their right hand when being sworn in on May 17 for their new term.
