"You are a nice man, don't let others take advantage."

This was Batu Kawan Umno division deputy leader Khairuddin Abu Hassan's advice to Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak during a meeting at the latter's residence.

He said the duo met for an hour to discuss the 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) issue a week before Najib left for the United States.

"But if he (Najib) doesn't do anything, I would not retract my police report," he told reporters when met outside the Bukit Aman police headquarters.

The Penang Umno man was called in to have his statement recorded regarding his report this morning.

Khairuddin had caused a stir when he filed a report against the government-owned investment fund, and urged for its directors to be investigated.

'I want Najib to explain the issue'

Meanwhile, the Umno member stressed that he would not withdraw the report if Najib remained mum on the matter and did not resolve the issue.

“I want Najib to explain to the rakyat on 1MDB’s position. If I am satisfied with his explanation, I may withdraw the police report.

"But sadly, Najib (left) has not given a clear explanation on the matter," he noted, adding that the debt incurred by 1MDB now stood at RM41.9 billion.

The Umno man had previously said that he decided to lodge the report after studying various news reports on 1MDB - including those done internationally - which showed multiple weaknesses in the project.

And despite receiving brickbats from Umno, Khairuddin had insisted that he was merely "helping" Najib, and accused certain party leaders of trying to oust the prime minister.

He stressed that Najib was "human", and it was the responsibility of Umno leaders around him to alert the prime minister with regard to his mistakes, but that they were not doing so.
