G Palanivel has denied that his wife is the "real MIC president" as claimed by a party leader who was dropped from the Central Working Committee (CWC).

"I categorically say that my wife and none of my other family members have anything to do with the administration of MIC.

"I urge all those irresponsible persons not to stoop so low and to put a stop to allegations involving my family members," he said in a statement today.

Ousted MIC central working committee (CWC) member R Ramanan claimed yesterday that the "real president" of MIC is Palanivel's wife R Kanagam.
 
"She is the real president. Why? I will tell you in the second press conference, which will be all about this," Ramanan (left) said, claiming that he has proof to back this claim as well.

"600,000 MIC members elected Palanivel as the president. Will the real president please stand up?" he said in a press conference yesterday.

Palanivel said he fully “understood” the counter reaction of someone who had been removed from his position and those with their own agenda.

“Though, at first I thought I should not react similarly, I felt that I should place on record that the allegations made by these individuals are untrue,” he said.

He also defended the appointment of a lawyer, only known as Chandra, to act for MIC in handling issues with the Registrar of Societies (ROS).

“He is a legally qualified person and he has vast experience handling similar matters. Neither I nor the deputy president are qualified to handle legal matters.

“Therefore, there is nothing wrong in his appointment and his involvement in acting for MIC in this matter,” he said.

Palanivel had earlier given his assurance to party members that he will not allow MIC to be deregistered by the ROS over the party leadership elections irregularities.

This is despite numerous allegations, including one by Ramanan, that Palanivel wants the party to be deregistered.
