MTUC seeks interest-free loans for flood victims

The Malaysian Trades Union Congress (MTUC) has called on employers in the private sector to provide interest-free loans to employees who have been affected by Malaysia's worst flooding in more than three decades.
"Rebuilding their houses and purchasing the basic needs required will not be easy, especially for the lower income group," MTUC secretary general N Gopal Kishnam said in a statement today.
The Malaysian Trades Union Congress (MTUC) has called on employers in the private sector to provide interest-free loans to employees who have been affected by Malaysia's worst flooding in more than three decades.
"Rebuilding their houses and purchasing the basic needs required will not be easy, especially for the lower income group," MTUC secretary general N Gopal Kishnam said in a statement today.
"MTUC is urging private sector employers to go beyond their formal obligation by providing interest-free loans to their staff, in addition to what has been provided so far," Gopal (right) said.
He called on employers to be "proactive" in helping to relieve the burden of their employees during these challenging times.
In a separate statement, the Malay Trade and Entrepreneur Association (Perdasama) urged the government to take the floods as an opportunity to provide better opportunities for Malay traders who have been badly affected by the floods.
Perdasama president Moehamad Izat Emir said the federal government must ensure that all aid for the traders are channelled through the respective state governments and city councils in states that have been hit by the floods.
Perdasama will also hold a meeting with all its members, among whom are traders affected by the floods, to find a solution to the matter.
"Don't just focus on financial aid but also look for ways to provide trade opportunities in new places with potentials such as business centres," Moehamad said.
He asked the federal and state governments to use the opportunity to rebuild the affected trade places with better infrastructure so that they become an "attraction for the public" in the future.
