Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak has contracted E. coli bacterial infection, according to a Twitter posting from his office.

It stated that Najib was infected after visiting the flood-hit areas in several states last week.

"The doctors have adviced him to rest. He will resume his duties as soon as possible," read the tweet.

Najib had just returned from a working visit to Bangkok.

In a tweet later (see below), Najib said despite the infection he would continue to monitor the aid delivery to flood victims from home.

His tweet received numerous responses from other users wishing him a speedy recovery.


However, one twitter user, Iskandar Abdul Kadir, asked, "If PM gets infected by E. Coli during short inspection, what about the rakyat? Are they in danger of widespread infection?"

This morning, the prime minister was absent from an event at his office.

Najib was supposed to flag off an aid mission by the Prime Minister's Office Club at 8.15am in Putrajaya.

He was however replaced by his deputy Muhyiddin Yassin, who arrived an hour later.

Najib was forced to cut his vacation short when the flood situation in various states deteriorated, displacing tens of thousands.

He also drew flak when a photograph of him surfaced playing golf with US President Barack Obama in Hawaii during that period.
