The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) yesterday said it could not take action based on claims made by DAP parliamentarian Chong Chieng Jen in relation to the award of a road construction project in Sarawak worth RM119 million.

 

According to MACC deputy chief commissioner Mohd Shukri Abdull, the information furnished by Chong, who is Bandar Kuching MP, was insufficient for the MACC to initiate further investigation.

 

“Based on Chong’s statement, MACC has concluded that he does not have the relevant information.

 

“MACC will not take action based on incomplete information. If he has more information on the matter, he can contact MACC’s director of the investigations division,” said Mohd Shukri in a statement.

 

He also refuted Chong’s claim that the MACC wanted to “trap” the MP in this issue.

 

“This is because every complainant who gives information directly to the MACC without disclosing it to the public first will be protected under the Whistleblower Protection Act 2010,” he said.

 

From open tender to selected tender

 

Mohd Shukri, on Sunday, had asked Chong to share further information on the alleged corruption in the award of the project.

 

Sarawak DAP raised suspicion when the tender for the Song/Sungai Yong road project in Kapid was switched from open tender to selected tender just before the award.

 

Chong ( lef t) had given the MACC seven days to complete their probe on the matter after revealing that 53 contractors had submitted their bids in the open tender before the project was suddenly classified as selected tender.

 

The project was eventually awarded to Impian Zaman Sdn Bhd.

Impian Zaman did not respond to Malaysiakini 's request for comment.
