MP: Fine on 2nd bridge contractors too light

The contractors from Cergas Murni Sdn Bhd and Giga Engineering & Construction Sdn Bhd were fined RM50, 000 and RM35, 000 respectively by the court at Balik Pulau yesterday for failing to ensure safety at their project site.
The failure to ensure safety resulted in the bridge ramp collapsing last year, which caused the death of former policeman Tajuddin Zainal Abidin and injuries to two civilians.
“The punishment is very light and does not give proper justice to the victim, Tajuddin, who lost his life in the incident,” Sim said in a statement today.
The PKR lawmaker urged the prosecution to appeal the decision made and refer the case to the High Court.
“The prosecutors should appeal to the High Court on the decision made. A more stringent sentence is important to give a warning to contractors to be more serious in their work.”
Sim (right) also urged the Works Ministry to look into the matter and blacklist the contractors permanently, adding that the current blacklist of only six months is “not deterrent enough”.
Penang Department of Occupational Safety and Health (Dosh) chief director Mohtar Musri should also “declassify” the investigation probe reports as the public is “still in dark” over the cause of the ramp collapsing, Sim added.
“Despite it being 18 months since the incident, the cause of the accident is still a mystery. I urge Mohtar to declassify the investigation report. This would give closure to the victim’s family.”
Sim also pressed Jambatan Kedua Sdn Bhd (JKSB), which is in charge of the bridge’s construction, to take be more accountable over the accident.
“I urge JKSB to announce the accountability actions which have been taken since the bridge collapse.
“They should take a more serious accountability as we have not yet seen any responsibility from JKSB’s side yet,” Sim said.
