Mid-East students in Malaysia to double by 2020

The number of students from the Middle East, South Asia and North Africa furthering their studies in Malaysia is expected to double by 2020 following promotions conducted continuously via the Education Malaysia (EM) office in Dubai.
The number of students from the Middle East, South Asia and North Africa furthering their studies in Malaysia is expected to double by 2020 following promotions conducted continuously via the Education Malaysia (EM) office in Dubai.
EM regional director for the Middle East, South Asia and North Africa, Shushilil Azam Shuib said currently, there were about 30,000 students from these regions furthering their education in various fields in Malaysia.
Met by Bernama at his office recently, he said the target was to raise the number of students from these regions to 60,000 by 2020.
According to him, higher learning institutions in Malaysia were also now promoting the intake of students from these regions and the latest was by Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP).
UniMAP, which is targeting to be among the top 500 universities in the world by 2020 recently opened a gallery at the EM office for a two-month period and it has since attracted many local students.
Shushilil Azam said to ensure the gallery was well publicised, EM encouraged institutions of higher learning to have launching events by Malaysian leaders or dignitaries.
For instance, the UniMAP gallery which has been operating since early this month was officially opened by the Raja Muda of Perlis, Tuanku Syed Faizuddin Putra Jamalullail, who is also the university’s chancellor, on Dec 3.
The occasion which was attended by local and international leaders was effective in highlighting the university’s location and its ideal studying environment.
Shushilil described the efforts of promoting institutions of higher learning at the EM office as a smart move and hoped all such institutions in Malaysia would take advantage of the facilities provided by the EM office.
Apart from the gallery, he said the office also organised visits by students, especially from the Gulf states, to Malaysia.
“We have brought them to see the various facilities of leading higher learning institutions including Universiti Islam Antarabangsa Malaysia,” he said.
