Traders are prohibited from using the ‘pre-GST sales’ tagline to promote sales of goods, said Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Minister Hasan Malek.

He said the slogan could confuse consumers as if prices of goods will be rising as soon as the goods and services tax (GST) is implemented in April next year.

“The theme could damage the business environment,” he said when commenting on traders exploiting the tagline in their year-end sales.

Hassan said traders could be charged under the Trade Descriptions Act 2011 for misleading consumers.

“Consumers can lodge their complaints and action will be taken,” he told reporters after presenting a contribution of RM130,000 from Giant Supermarket to Umno Youth’s Youth Brigade in Putrajaya yesterday.

The contribution in the form of daily necessities would be distributed to flood-prone states such as Johor, Pahang, Terengganu, Kelantan, Kedah and Sabah, he said.
