The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) must act on a judge's claim of attempted interference, PAS information chief Mahfuz Omar said.

Shah Alam High Court Judge Abdul Alim Abdullah claimed that senior lawyer Salehuddin Saidin had tried to interfere in a case he was handling.

Salehudin is slated to become a judicial commissioner, a judge on contract basis.

 

Abdul Alim in his written grounds for recusal from a case where Salehuddin was acting as lawyer said Salehuddin repeatedly tried to contact him through informal channels about the case, the Malay Mail Online reported.

 

Salehudin denied any improper conduct and threatened legal action against Abdul Alim and the media for publishing the allegations.

 

"The MACC must investigate the claims made by the judge about an attempt by a lawyer to influence him in a case involving a client and if proven true, action and prosecution must be done.

 

"The Judicial Appointments Commission must also immediately suspend any appointment process to the High Court for the lawyer involved," Mahfuz said in a statement today.

 

Mahfuz also urged the Bar Council to refer the matter to its disciplinary board for investigation on whether there was a breach of ethics.

 

Likewise, Mahfuz said action should be taken against Abdul Alim if it was found that the judge’s claims in the written judgment were untrue.

Salehudin was representing former Gerakan Teratai assemblyperson Yap Soo Sun in an appeal against a graft conviction.
