In response to the many suggestions on methods to counter piracy (and potential terrorism) along the Straits of Malacca which have ranged from having low earth orbit satellites to the use or airborne radar, the concern really should be whether we have sufficient enforcement resources and a concerted effort amongst the border countries to attend to such acts of piracy and terrorism.

It would be pointless if we are able to identify where such acts are in progress using these latest technologically advanced systems but cannot respond due to insufficient enforcement resources.

Our enforcement officers can only act within our borders and when these pirates take off into the waters of our neighbours, they will be scot-free if our counterparts are not acting in parallel.

And within our system, there seem to be too many agencies involved - the Royal Malaysian Navy, the Marine Police, the Customs Department and the Fisheries and Marine Department.

It is high time that we have a consolidated agency in the form of a Police Coast Guard to tackle all maritime enforcement duties.
