Kelantan Umno chief Mustapa Mohamed has dismissed the possibility of the party forming a coalition government with PAS in Kelantan.

"There's no need for us to form a coalition government in Kelantan. If possible, we want to be a constructive opposition," Bernama quoted him as saying today.

"The opposition will give constructive criticism whenever necessary with the hope the state government will provide better services to the people.

"So far, we feel the state government is incapable," Mustapa told reporters after officiating at a function in Pengkalan Chepa in Kelantan.

Mustapa, who is also state opposition leader, was commenting on the recent call by Gua Musang MP Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah that the Kelantan PAS Government led by Menteri Besar Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat and the opposition by Mustapa should form a coalition government in the interests of Kelantanese.

Not conducive

The Kelantan Umno chief said the current political scenario was not conducive for both sides to form a coalition government.

"If PAS is not interested, we're even more not keen on the coalition," he said.

Nik Aziz said yesterday that Kelantan PAS need not form a coalition government with the BN as the state's development could be carried out through other forms of cooperation with the Federal Government.

He said PAS could still feel the bitter experience when it was expelled from the coalition in 1973. He, however, said it was up to the national party leadership to make a decision on the matter.

Kelantan is the only state under PAS rule after the opposition party won 24 seats and the BN capturing 21 in last March's general election.
