PARLIAMENT The government has no plans to bring back mini-buses in the Klang Valley.
Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Nancy Shukri said instead, the government has introduced Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) to improve bus connectivity with mass rapid transport systems.
“BRT has been introduced in the Klang Valley and for a start, the BRT Sunway alignment is now being developed and is expected to be operational next year and there are plans to extend the service up to Klang,” she said when replying to a question from Fong Kui Lun (DAP-Bukit Bintang) in the Dewan Rakyat today.
On June 9, 2012, Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak launched the BRT-Sunway Line which will give seamless bus-Light Rapid Transit connectivity for 500,000 residents in Bandar Sunway and Subang.
Costing an estimated RM300 million, the project is an initiative between the public and private sectors involving government-linked company Syarikat Prasarana Negara Bhd (Prasarana) and Sunway Bhd.
Nancy (left) also told the House that the Mass Rapid Transport (MRT) line (MRT1) from Sungai Buloh to Kajang would be operational in 2017 while the MRT2 from Kota Damansara to Putrajaya was at the planning stage.
Not only that, she said there were also plans to connect the Kelana Jaya Line and Ampang Line with Bandar Utama and Klang.
As for public transport usage, Nancy percentage in the Klang Valley increased from 19.6 percent in 2012 to 20.8 percent last year.
“Ridership using LRT, Monorai, ERL and commuter trains last year was 214 million trips translating into an average of 593,321 passengers daily.
The daily average this year from January to October was 612,887 passenger trips.
