A DAP lawmaker has decried the excessive expense on the “ancient” Integrated Transport Information System (Itis).
Segambut MP Lim Lip Eng said the variable message sign (VMS) boards only display festive greetings and inform that the particular road is congested when users are already on that road.
And the Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL), which manages the system, had paid RM565.74 million as of 2013, he said.
“The VMS display board at Batu 5, Jalan Ipoh, never works,” he said, giving an example.
Lim, who claimed to have seen DBKL’s budget draft for 2015, said the amount allocated for the Itis system was “preposterous” and “excessive”.
The DAP parliamentarian however could not disclose the amount as the document is protected under the Official Secrets Act (OSA).
Lim also said he had asked Federal Territories Minister Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor in Parliament this week to take stern action, which includes lodging reports with the police and the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) against those responsible for approving the project as well as the contractors involved.
“This is for the RM565.74 million of the rakyat’s money wasted, due to the continuous failure in ensuring the system’s efficiency.
“I also told Tengku Adnan that it is better for the system to be scrapped as it uses ancient technology,” he said.
The Auditor-General’s Report in 2011 had highlighted the failure of Itis equipment such as closed circuit television cameras and VMS boards, which frequently break down.
