Frustrated by a lack of answers and explanations in Malaysia, a PKR MP will engage foreign authorities to trace the RM7 billion 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) fund originally placed in the Cayman Islands.

Pandan MP Rafizi Ramli said all four of his questions in Parliament to determine where the money currently is was met with similar "copy and paste" answers, which he deemed as an "insult" to the Dewan Rakyat.

He said he would write to the auditor-general and also the Bank Negara governor to  audit what has happened to the funds, which are explicitly guaranteed by the Malaysian government, and to get information on where it has ended up.

"But if I don't get answers from Bank Negara, we will pursue this with Switzerland, Hong Kong, and Singapore authorities, because anti-money laundering regulations are pretty much the same all over the world," he said.

Rafizi (left) said that he is targeting these three countries because the money was managed by a Hong Kong firm called Bridge Partners, while it was also transferred on its way back to Malaysia through a Swiss bank subsidiary located in Singapore.

“It doesn’t look like I will be getting any answers from the Parliament. The prime minister is not going to answer questions on 1MDB, so I will be writing to the auditor-general,” he said.

Even though auditor-general Ambrin Buang had said that 1MDB need not be audited, Rafizi said that the Cayman Islands funds should be audited as they are explicitly guaranteed by the government and would gave direct implications on the state.

He also said that Bank Negara would have information on the transfer of the funds and was hopeful that they would shed some light on the matter.
